BACKGROUND & TIMELINE
Fiorenza Micheli, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford University. Micheli’s research focuses on the processes shaping marine communities and the strategies to incorporate this understanding in the management and conservation of marine ecosystems. In addition, her research studies the organization and functioning of marine communities to increase our understanding of human impacts on the marine environment and to propose conservation and restoration strategies. Her Pew Marine Fellowship project is designed to assess human threats to Mediterranean marine ecosystems and their cumulative impacts on deep and shallow reefs. Her data will be used to provide critical information and tools for the management of existing and the establishment of new marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.
