Though selected from a broad array of backgrounds, Pew Fellows in Marine Conservation are united in their focus on initiatives that contribute to marine conservation strategies, deployment of new technologies, broad dissemination of information and the establishment of sustainable ocean policies at the regional, national and international levels.
Since the inception of the program in 1990, Advisory Committees have selected more than 130 Fellows. Together, this community of Pew Fellows in Marine Conservation forms a remarkable network of conservation leaders actively engaged in protecting the global marine environment. |

PROGRAM BACKGROUND |

Pew Marine Conservation Fellowships are regarded as the world's preeminent awards for marine conservation. They have been granted since 1996 to fund innovative work in marine ecosystems, fisheries management, coastal conservation and marine contamination. |

PROGRAM TIMELINE |

|
1989:
The Pew Charitable Trusts creates the “Pew Scholars Program in Conservation and the Environment”
1990:
The first awards are presented to conservationists.
1994:
The program switches from emphasizing scholars to recognizing fellows. This shift expands the scope of the program beyond the academic science sphere to include individuals from the non-profit, government and private sectors.
1996:
At the direction of The Pew Charitable Trusts, the emphasis of the program shifts from general environmental issues to marine conservation.
1998:
During the International Year of the Ocean, the program is permanently designated as a marine initiative and renamed the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation.
1999:
The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation program expands to include individuals working in the arts, communication, film, media and journalism in order to support public outreach and education about the oceans.
2003:
The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation becomes a program of The Pew Institute for Ocean Science established in October of 2003 in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science.
2006:
The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation continues to expand its impact and outreach on marine conservation initiatives worldwide.
2009:
The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation becomes part of the Ocean Science Division at the Pew Environment Group. The Pew Environment Group is the conservation arm of The Pew Charitable Trusts. |
